Public Debt

Public debt is the money a government owes because it has borrowed to cover expenses. Countries borrow money by issuing bonds or taking loans from international institutions and private capital, which can be local or foreign. If public debt grows too much, it can make it harder for governments to invest in healthcare, education, and infrastructure, as more money goes toward paying off the debt.
